About Water Baptism

Thursday, May 16, 2019 by Quesada, Jose | Christianity

I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. (Matthew 3:11, NLT)

On May 5 of 2019, Christ Church Fort Worth celebrated the Immerse weekend: a series of services dedicated to the water baptism of new believers. In the event, people got baptized in water as a public declaration of faith and as a washout of sin. After experiencing different forms of water baptism, the questioning of its meaning and its importance might be common among new believers.

Water baptism is the act of immersion in water to publicly declare one's repentance from sin and a commitment to a new life in Christ. Its meaning is found in the exodus of Israel from Egypt in where God's chosen people (Israel) were freed from evil (Pharaoh) through the crossing of the Red Sea (water). The event represented the transition from an evil past to the beginning of the journey to the promised land.

In a different account, the book of Matthew described the baptism of Jesus Christ as an act that "fulfilled all righteousness"(Matthew 3: 15). As defined by John the Baptist, water baptism is an event for "those who repent of their sins and turn to God" (Matthew 3: 11). The water baptism of Jesus preceded his baptism of the Holy Spirit and the beginning of Jesus' most powerful ministry.

By looking at these two accounts, several conclusions can be drawn. First, water baptism is a public declaration of faith, an act of repentance from sin, and the celebration of a new life in Christ. Second, water baptism is a step towards the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Third, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a key element for a powerful ministry on earth.

If you are interested in water baptism, but don't know how to proceed, let me suggest the following steps:

  1. Repent from sin by accepting Jesus Christ as savior and Lord.
  2. Get connected with a local church.
  3. Wait and respond to the invitation for water baptism.
